The turn of the century saw musical life in Taunton off to an optimistic start with the founding of Taunton Choral Society.  Sadly however, 1939 brought about an unwanted hiatus in the life of the Society.

After the war the ‘old’ Taunton Choral Society did not restart, but in 1955 Taunton Madrigal Society (that had become active again in 1945) changed its name to Taunton Madrigal and Choral Society and amended its constitution to admit women to the Society, so enabling a new type of repertoire.
