December 9th St Mary Magdalene, Taunton

Fantasia On Christmas

TCS expresses gratitude to the Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust for its financial support of this concert

December sees the opening concert of TCS’s 2017/18 season, and this year we focus on the great passion works in the large repertoire! We’ll be doing repertoire by Bach and Brahms – two of the “great ‘B’ composers” (can you guess the third) later in the year, but our opening concert is the real showstopper. We’re singing works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Bach and Finzi including a sublime piece for piano and strings played by our MD Ed Goater.

The programme starts with a look back over the year with Vaughan Williams’ Folk Song for Four Seasons. Bach’s famous cantata 140 – “Sleepers, awake” then follows with its familiar melodies that shows Bach at his most lyrical. A Fantasia on Christmas Carols roots us in the here-and-now, and we end with Finzi’s spellbinding In Terra Pax – a story about the angels’ visit to the shepherds, as told by an onlooker on a distant hill.

You can “Crack the Code” of the pieces by hearing our fascinating pre-concert talk about the hidden influences of Wagner and Mahler in the music, and you can enjoy that with a glass of wine.

Tickets: Premium seating £18 – Standard seating £15
